Twelve winters, two ways.
Eileen, you were right to look closely at the numbers. Here is what the next twelve years look like, side by side.
Twelve years, two totals
The oil side is an estimate; your actual gallons will change it. The plan side is exact.
Staying on oil
$54,250 about, estimate- Oil, 12 heating seasons estimate
- $49,249
- Replacement furnace good-deal price
- $5,000
Your plan
$28,150 exact- $175 a month in year one rising 1.99% a year
- $28,150
If the furnace costs the $7,000 you were quoted, the oil side is about $56,250.
Year by year
The oil side starts with the furnace bill, then adds a heating season of oil every winter. The plan adds one year of payments at a time.
Running totals by year, rounded to the dollar. Oil is an estimate; plan payments are exact.

What the plan includes
- Heating and coolingReplaces the window AC.
- Three indoor units on one outdoor unitOne system for the whole house.
- A 12-year warrantyFor the length of the plan.
- The rebate, already appliedIt is built into the monthly payment.
- No oil deliveries, no furnace to buyNo $5,000 to $7,000 bill up front, and no exposure to oil price swings.
One note on oil: the estimate assumes oil prices move the same 2% a year as the plan. A year ago the Massachusetts average was about $3.55 a gallon. This week it is $6.12. It can move a lot either way.
How we got these numbers
Staying on oil
Replacement furnace: $5,000, a good-deal price. Quotes are often around $7,000; your own quote was $7,000. With a $7,000 furnace the twelve-year total is about $56,250.
Oil is bought in the heating season, about October to March. We estimate about 600 gallons a season for a home around 1,000 square feet. Your actual gallons will change this.
Price: $6.12 a gallon, the Massachusetts statewide average for the week of October 19, 2026, from the weekly survey by the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.
We assume oil rises 2% a year, the same rate as the plan, so the comparison is like for like. Year one is 600 x $6.12 = $3,672; year twelve is $4,566. Twelve seasons: $49,249. If oil stayed flat at $6.12 the whole time, oil alone would be $44,064, or $49,064 with the furnace.
The plan
$175.00 a month in year one, rising 1.99% each year, to $217.36 a month in year twelve. That is $2,100 in year one and $2,608 in year twelve. Twelve years: $28,149.55, shown as $28,150. This is exact math, not an estimate.
The rebate is already applied to the monthly payment.
